How to Install the Desktop App

Overview

The CAD ROOMS Desktop App connects your local engineering environment with your cloud workspace. It allows engineers to work locally in native CAD software while keeping projects connected to the web platform.
This article explains how to install and sign in to the Desktop App.

System Requirements

  • Windows operating system
  • Internet connection
  • Windows Projected File System enabled (required for sync functionality)
If this feature is disabled, the Desktop App will not sync correctly.
⚠️
Important — Check This Before Installing
Not all Windows systems allow this type of installation by default. Before clicking the installer, make sure the required system permissions and security settings are enabled. On some devices, these settings may block the installer or prevent the app from starting or syncing correctly.
See Troubleshooting below before proceeding if needed.

Step 1 — Download the Installer

  1. Visit the official CAD ROOMS Download Page ( Coming soon. Please contact the support@cadrooms.com to get the latest installer).
  1. Click Download, to prompt the following file to be downloaded: CAD_ROOMS_0.1.0_x64-setup.exe
  1. Save the installer to your computer.

Step 2 — Run the Installer

Locate the downloaded setup file and double-click to start installation.
  • You’ll see the Welcome to CAD ROOMS Setup window. Click Next to continue.

  • Select Add/Reinstall components, then click Next.
    • CAD ROOMS Desktop App installer running on a local machine to complete the setup process
  • Choose the installation directory and click Next again to complete the installation.
🚫
Do not choose a folder inside OneDrive (e.g. C:\Users\<YourName>\OneDrive\). Both CAD ROOMS and OneDrive use Windows Projected File System — nesting them causes sync conflicts and file errors. Use a path like C:\CADRooms\ instead.

Done!
Your desktop app is now installed and ready to connect to your CAD ROOMS workspace. After installation, launch the app and log in using your CAD ROOMS credentials.
With this step, you can start syncing your projects and settings.

Step 3 — Sign In

  1. Open the CAD ROOMS Desktop App.
  1. A browser window will open automatically.
  1. Sign in using your CAD ROOMS credentials.
  1. After authentication, you will be logged into the Desktop App.
If you do not yet have an account, you can create one during this process.

Updating the Desktop App

When a new version is available, you will receive an in-app notification.
Follow the on-screen instructions to update.
⚠️
Before clicking update: Close any open CAD files (Creo, SolidWorks, etc.) first. If an update prompt appears while you have files open, choose Later and update at the start of your next session — otherwise you may see a "Please clean up…" message. See Troubleshooting below.

Troubleshooting

If you run into installation, launch, sync, or update issues, see the relevant section below.

Installer doesn't run, app won't start, or sync fails

This usually happens when Windows Projected File System is disabled on your computer.

How to enable it:
  1. Press the Windows key.
  1. Type Turn Windows features on or off, and press Enter.
  1. In the window that appears, scroll down and find Windows Projected File System.
  1. Check the box next to it and click OK.
  1. Windows will need to install the files and will likely ask you to restart your computer.
  1. After your computer restarts, try running the CAD ROOMS installer again. If the app was already installed, relaunch the Desktop App.

"Please clean up…" message or empty Projects folder after an update

Example of the "Please clean up" message
Example of the "Please clean up" message
This happens when CAD ROOMS updates while you have CAD files open in another application (for example Creo or SolidWorks). Your files are safe — the local Projects folder is only a mirror of your cloud workspace.
Quick fix:
  1. Fully close CAD ROOMS and any CAD application (Creo, SolidWorks, etc.).
  1. Delete the local Projects folder named in the error (usually Documents\Cadrooms\Projects) — it's safe to delete; CAD ROOMS will rebuild it from the cloud.
  1. Restart CAD ROOMS to re-pull your projects fresh.
To avoid this: when an update prompt appears while you have CAD files open, choose Later and let the update apply at the start of your next session.
